Over 20 YFC members from across Wales came together to compete in a new Dairy Stockjudging competition held at the Welsh Dairy Event on Tuesday 24th October 2017 in Carmarthen.

A brand new competition that attracted junior and senior members to the event proved to be very successful, showcasing the members’ skills with all gaining invaluable experience, in readiness for upcoming stockjudging competitions at county level.

Members were split into their respective age group categories of under 18, 21 and 26. This exciting competition saw members as young as 12 stockjudging for the first time, gaining valuable confidence and learning new skills through the federations’ competitions.

During the Dairy Event two rings of four dairy cattle were judged by 22 members. As this was the first time for this competition to be held, members were asked to place four Jersey Heifers and four Holstein Heifers only and reasons were to be given if the position of first place was tied. Due to the high standard of many of the members competing, two members in the under 18 and under 21 categories were asked to give their reason to the judges due to them being tied on 100 points for the two rings.

Cups were kindly donated by the Dairy event’s President Mr Mansel Raymond, Mr Meurig Jones and also Mr David Lloyd, which were awarded to the winners in each category. Both Mansel and Meurig presented the cups to the winning individuals and were pleased with how the competition was run and are looking forward to holding the competition again next year.

The winners of each category were as follows;

Under 26, Mr Rhys Jones from Llannon YFC, Carmarthenshire

Under 21, Mr William Griffiths from St Clears YFC, Carmarthenshire

Under 18, Rhys Jones from Llannon YFC, Carmarthenshire

We would like to thank The Welsh Dairy Event committee for their support and allowing Wales YFC to hold the stockjudging competition during their event. We would also like to express a sincere thank you Mansel Raymond, Meurig Jones and David Lloyd for kindly donating the cups for the competition. We are already looking forward as an organisation to plan the competition again for the 2018 event.
